Keith Jones has spent decades traveling the coastlines and whale lagoons of Baja California, leading wildlife expeditions and observing whales in their natural environment.
Since 1994, he has followed the annual gray whale migration south into the protected lagoons of Baja California, returning season after season to study the behavior of the whales and guide travelers through one of the world’s great wildlife migrations.
What began as a fascination with gray whales eventually grew into a lifetime centered around marine wildlife, exploration, and travel.

Over the years, Keith expanded his work far beyond gray whale watching alone.
He began leading blue whale expeditions into the Sea of Cortez near Loreto, Baja California Sur, where blue whales, finback whales, humpbacks, dolphins, and other marine mammals gather seasonally.
His years on the water have included:
Keith’s work has always been rooted in direct observation and time spent in the field rather than behind a desk or in a classroom.
Outside the whale lagoons, Keith has traveled extensively throughout Asia, the Arctic, Mexico, and remote wilderness regions around the world. His journeys have taken him through Thailand, China, Laos, Cambodia, India, Afghanistan, the Canadian Arctic, and many other regions.
Those travels included:
Through newsletters, travel journals, and field observations, Keith documented these experiences in a style shaped by firsthand encounters with wildlife and the people he met along the way.
For many years, Keith closely documented gray whale behavior during migration seasons in Laguna Ojo de Liebre and surrounding Baja lagoons.
His long-term observations focused on:
These observations came from spending extended periods on the water during migration seasons, often watching whales daily over the course of several months.
Throughout his work, Keith has consistently advocated for responsible whale watching and ethical wildlife encounters.
He has written extensively about the importance of:
His approach has always emphasized patience, observation, and respect for the animals rather than intrusive interaction.
Much of Keith’s life and work remains connected to Baja California and the Sea of Cortez.
The region’s deserts, coastlines, lagoons, and marine ecosystems became the backdrop for decades of wildlife observation and exploration. The annual return of the whales to Baja’s protected lagoons continues to shape the stories, experiences, and expeditions that define Grey Whale today.
The ultimate whale watching trip with intimate gray whale encounters and unforgettable shore-side adventures.
